Sikh Gurdwara of San Jose

A large Sikh temple in the Evergreen foothills, founded in 1984 and described as the largest gurdwara outside India.

The congregation formed in 1984, first meeting in a rented community center and then in a small building in East San Jose. It later bought a larger property further east in Evergreen. The first phase of the present gurdwara was finished in 2004 and the second in 2011, giving it about 90,000 square feet; some 20,000 people are thought to have come on opening day.

The main Diwan Hall sees about 10,000 worshippers on Sundays. Its kitchen and hall serve langar, the community meal, and its grounds include a Sunday school for Punjabi and kirtan, basketball courts and a free health clinic.
