Downtown
Downtown San Jose grew up around the plaza of the 1790s pueblo. The first state capitol stood there, and today the plaza, the cathedral and the museums still sit around it. Made in Downtown San Jose, our sister site, covers it in depth.

The pueblo moved to this site in 1797 and laid out its plaza mayor, now the Plaza de César Chávez, which is described as the oldest public space in Northern California. California’s capitol stood there from 1849 to 1851. (Wikipedia)
The Peralta Adobe, built around 1797, is the oldest building in the city, and the Fallon House of 1855 stands across the street; History San José runs both. The Cathedral Basilica of St. Joseph stands where the pueblo’s first church was built in 1803. (Wikipedia, Wikipedia)
From 1881 to 1915 an electric light tower 237 feet tall straddled Santa Clara and Market Streets. San José State University, founded in 1857, and the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Library are downtown too. (Wikipedia, Wikipedia)
