The neighborhood around King and Story roads, ZIP code 95122, is a hub of the East Side and of Latino culture in San Jose. It is sometimes called Tropicana, after the shopping center on its southwest corner. The first grocery stores targeted by the farmworkers’ grape boycott were on King Road, and the Mi Pueblo supermarket chain started here.
In the 1980s the area was a center of lowrider culture. The Mural de la Raza, painted near the intersection in that decade, is now one of the oldest murals in the city. San Jose banned lowrider cruising in 1986 and repealed the ban in 2022.
