Portuguese settlers, most of them farmers from the Azores, came to the Santa Clara Valley from the 1850s. Their neighborhood east of downtown still has bakeries, fish markets, social clubs and the Portuguese Band of San José, described as the oldest surviving Portuguese marching band in California. Adega, in Little Portugal, was the first restaurant in San Jose to earn a Michelin star.
Five Wounds Portuguese National Church, at 1375 East Santa Clara Street, was founded in 1914. It was built partly from timber of the Portuguese Pavilion at the 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco. The Portuguese Historical Museum stands in History Park.
